- Analysis: How does the author use language to create effects?
- Argument: Identify claims, evidence, and reasoning.
- Tone and mood: What feeling does the author create?
- Figurative language: Metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, allusion.
Critical reading strategies
- Ask: What is the author's argument or position?
- Evaluate: Is the evidence strong or weak?
- Compare: How do two texts treat the same topic differently?

- State your claim clearly in the first sentence.
