  • Analysis: How does the author use language to create effects?
  • Argument: Identify claims, evidence, and reasoning.
  • Tone and mood: What feeling does the author create?
  • Figurative language: Metaphors, hyperbole, idioms, allusion.

Critical reading strategies

  • Ask: What is the author's argument or position?
  • Evaluate: Is the evidence strong or weak?
  • Compare: How do two texts treat the same topic differently?

Writing response tips

  • State your claim clearly in the first sentence.
