  • Theme: What lesson does the story teach? Look at how characters change.
  • Point of view: First person (I/we) vs. third person (he/she/they).
  • Text structure: Problem-solution, cause-effect, compare-contrast, sequence.
  • Vocabulary: Use prefixes, suffixes, and context clues together.

Advanced strategies

  • Annotate as you read — underline, star, question mark.
  • Summarize each paragraph in the margin in your own words.
  • Compare what two passages say about the same topic.
  • Always go back to the text for proof before answering.

  • States of matter: Solid, liquid, gas. Particles move faster as temperature rises.

  • Physical vs chemical changes: Physical = reversible (ice melting). Chemical = new substance (burning).

Ecosystems

  • Food chains: Producer → Consumer → Decomposer.
  • Adaptations: Traits that help organisms survive in their environment.
  • Inherited vs learned: Eye color is inherited. Riding a bike is learned.

Earth and Space

  • Water cycle: Evaporation → Condensation → Precipitation → Collection.

Force and Motion

  • Force: A push or pull that changes an object's motion.
  • Gravity: Pulls everything toward Earth's center.
  • Friction: Slows objects down. More friction = harder to slide.
  • Speed: Distance divided by time.
