Understanding Stories
- Main idea: What is the story mostly about?
- Retelling: Tell the beginning, middle, and end.
- Characters: What do they say and do? That shows who they are.
Vocabulary
- When you see a new word, look at the words around it for clues.
- Pictures can help you figure out what a word means.
- Try using the new word in your own sentence!
Text Features
- Headings tell you what a section is about.
- Bold words are important — pay attention to them.
- Pictures and captions give you extra information.
Making Predictions
- Use clues from the story to guess what happens next.
- Ask: "Based on what I read, what makes sense?"
- Check your prediction as you keep reading!
Addition & Subtraction
- Add and subtract within 100.
- Regroup when ones go over 9 (carry to tens).
- Use mental math: break numbers into tens and ones.
Skip Counting
- Count by 2s: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10...
- Count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25...
- Count by 10s: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50...
- Skip counting helps with multiplication later!
Measuring
- Use a ruler to measure length in inches or centimeters.
- Start at zero, not the edge of the ruler!
- Estimate first, then measure to check.
Fractions
- A half means 2 equal parts.
- A fourth means 4 equal parts.
- The parts must be equal — same size!
