Learning Zone

Skills that matter in first grade.

Sounding Out Words

  • Look at each letter and say its sound.
  • Blend the sounds together: c-a-t = cat!
  • If a word is tricky, break it into parts.

Sight Words

  • Some words you just need to memorize: the, is, and, was, said.
  • Practice 3 new sight words each week.
  • Write them, say them, find them in books!

Story Parts

  • Characters: Who is in the story?
  • Setting: Where does it happen?
  • Problem: What goes wrong?
  • Solution: How does it get fixed?

Asking Questions

  • Good readers ask questions while they read.
  • "Why did the character do that?"
  • "What will happen next?"

Addition to 20

  • Adding means putting numbers together.
  • Use a number line: start at the first number, hop forward.
  • Doubles are easy: 5+5=10, 6+6=12!

Subtraction to 20

  • Subtracting means taking away.
  • Start at the bigger number and count back.
  • Think: "What plus __ equals __?" to check your work.

Place Value

  • Numbers have tens and ones.
  • The number 14 = 1 ten and 4 ones.
  • Use base-ten blocks or drawings to see it!

Telling Time

  • The short hand shows the hour.
  • The long hand shows the minutes.
  • When the long hand points to 12, it's exactly on the hour.
